TMJ, jaw pain and headaches
What does TMJ mean?
The TMJs are the two joints in front of your ears that connect your lower jaw to your skull. Problems with these joints and the jaw muscles are grouped as temporomandibular disorders (TMD).
Is jaw clicking a problem?
Painless clicking is common and does not always need treatment. We assess it through your history and an examination.
Can jaw problems cause headaches?
Sometimes. Strain on the jaw joint and muscles can contribute to pain in the jaw, head, face and neck. Headaches have many possible causes, so we may also suggest seeing your GP.
Will I need a scan?
A 3D CBCT scan may be used to look closely at the jaw joints when it is clinically indicated. We explain why before any scan is taken.
What is the difference between an occlusal splint and a sleep appliance?
An occlusal splint is worn over the teeth, mainly to protect them from grinding or as part of jaw care. A mandibular advancement splint is worn during sleep and holds the lower jaw slightly forward to help keep the airway open.
Snoring and sleep apnoea
Do you diagnose sleep apnoea?
No. Sleep apnoea is diagnosed by a doctor from a sleep study. We assess whether a custom oral appliance may be suitable and work with your GP or sleep physician.
Do I need a sleep study first?
You can book without one, but it is best to speak with your GP and have a sleep study first. Please bring the report to your appointment.
Will an oral appliance stop my snoring?
It may reduce snoring in many patients, but results vary and it does not suit everyone.
Can children have sleep apnoea?
Yes. Sleep apnoea can affect people of any age, including children. Children who snore, mouth-breathe or have disturbed sleep should see their GP, and Dr Bachour can assess jaw and bite development in coordination with your child's doctors.
Results and costs
Can you guarantee my symptoms will go away?
No. Results vary from person to person. Our aim is to understand the cause and discuss options that may help, so you can make an informed choice.
How much does treatment cost?
Costs depend on your assessment and the options you choose. We explain fees before any treatment begins.
